First car ~8-10k ideas?

Been driving rentals for a few years now and figured I just need to get my own car. Still getting to grips with the whole car scene so bear with me.

I rent hatchbacks so would like to stay with that body type. I use rentals once or twice a week. 20km round trips. And once or twice in the month I'll take a long journey, ~300km. So it'll need to not crumble completely on the motorway.

I'm open to moving that budget up if needs be. Just not entirely sure what's the wisest option.

I've been told the following from friends

    - Stay away from French
    - Stay away from Diesel
    - Don't buy anything over 5 years old
    - Any Toyota post 2012 is apparently going to last until the end of days

Then the conversations get into the realm of what my tastes are. They talk about the shape, the feel etc. Not really my concern. I'm concerned with functionality, reliability and longevity.

Someone recommend I get a 2016 demo Corsa with 9k mileage for 13k. But then other people say I should spend as little as possible on my first car. I'm not a 19 year old on the roads for the first time either so maybe that's not applicable.

Any good suggestions for motors to look out for?

Before we suggest anything, you have to consider the fact that insurance for a first car (even though you're not 19) will be quite expensive. So you might actually be better off renting on a financial point of view. If I were you I'd do the math before committing to anything, including insurance, maintenance etc...
Should the math add up, and considering your criteria, then I would suggest Toyota. Different models might suit but I'd have a look @ the Prius, the Auris (available as a hybrid, which should be bombproof) and the Yaris (smaller, also available as a hybrid, but the 1.3 petrol is also worth a look).

Have you factored in the cost of first time insurance in your own name?

Yep. Its gonna be around 2-2.3k. Not nice, but I wont build up a no claims renting cars forever
