Ebay problem

I buy and sell on ebay occasionally. Have been a member for about 10 years with no issues.

Sold a designer (genuine) purse last week - listing showed one flaw, stated the purse is genuineand i list everything honestly (i do). As soon as the auction finished the winning bidder started emailing me saying she would not pay unless i told her it was genuine.

I told her, that as stated in the listing it was genuine and i didnt appreciate her essentially witholding payment. Anyway after about 8 or 9 emails between her and me i stopped replying as she was off her game. I should have cancelled the sale then - im an idiot.

Anyway she paid for the item two days later and i sent it - safely wrapped by registered post. She received it today and about 10 minutes after she got it (according to the tracking) she lodged a return request for the purse. Stating it was "misaligned" and had a hole in it and smelled of damp. Its a gaot skin purse which has irregularities, there was no hole in but she provided a photo of her stretching the side of it which causes a natural hole where the wallet folds.

I emailed her and told her i refute everything she says. I looked through her feedback history and she has a returned about 4 items from the same brand to various sellers. Its obviously a pattern. Do i just wait it out now and ask Ebay to step in after the 9 (i think) days.

Any advice about this? Im actually upset about it - people can be so scummy.

    Ebay might side with you.

If it goes to Paypal they'll always side with the buyer.

They do not always side with the buyer. I have won several cases with eBay lately.

Thanks for the replies. The buyer sent another bonkers message telling me she was going to the police (she is in London). I told her to feel free, i also advised her to take it to have the purse authenticated and that i would welcome the outcome.

I told her i was not refunding her money and that i would wait until i could get Ebay to step in. I really hope i win this one - she has a pattern of doing this and its so unfair. Its a moral victory if i win!

I dont think i will be selling on Ebay after this though!

I wouldn't be engaging in any more messages with her, I have never reported a user as I never had to it was always PayPal I dealt with issues but maybe you should do it.
You might say something in a message in the heat of the moment that might regret later.

i have taken your advice - she sent another message this morning so im going to leave it at that until Ebay steps in.

Thanks! i wont be selling on ebay again after this.

Sounds like an awful experience, Parchment!

Would really put you off selling on ebay. I have never sold on ebay but have bought a fair bit on the website over the last few years, have to say, all the sellers I have purchased goods from, have been nothing but professional (as I'm sure is the case with you, Parchment).

So, I would take the earlier advice given and do not reply or contact the buyer, let ebay sort it out, your buyer does sound a little bit problematic, putting it nicely.

Hope it all works out ok (I'm sure it will) in the end. Don't allow this person to put you off, don't allow him/her to have that power over you. Good luck. And don't forget, Karma will catch up with her/him. ;)

Just wanted to tell what happened - Ebay were asked to step in on the dispute on the 24th March by the buyer. I then got an email stating that Ebay wanted more information from the buyer and why she wanted a refund. The case was on hold until today.

Today i got an email saying that i was not found at fault, i did not have to give a refund. But the buyer got to keep the purse and ebay refunded her. Its kind of a stupid decision -she got her money and the purse but whatever...i didnt lose money.

I think thats me done selling on Ebay for a while.

She's your typical scam artist on Ebay/any buy & sell site. Knows what they are getting....still complains upon receipt...gets to keep item and gets their paypal refund etc. .

It's a pretty common and ugly trait.

Sold a tablet last week on eBay to someone up in dublin. Had used it for my own use, worked perfectly for me, but in any case I charged it up and tested it properly again before I put the listing up and also before sending it to the buyer. Also put in the listing "no returns accepted" sent to buyer, buyer thanked me for sending it out promptly and was happy . next day got a message to say "although it was working yesterday, I turned it on today and it dies not work , I shall be returning it for a refund" .. I wrote back with some helpful advice about resetting it by pressing power button for over 12seconds. Apparently he didn't like my tone and said he would return it as it wasn't fit for purpose etc.. I said well then I will be out of pocket by 13eur for recorded delivery and get back a broken tablet that I wouldn't be able to sell. When u went to check my PayPal, he or they withheld the payment for tablet so he had my tablet and they froze my money, without it even going to resolution! bloody cheek! That's on form as stealing from someone having the goods and the seller not getting paid. Yes its put me off selling with ebay now again. Aren't eBay and PayPal the one company now?

I totally agree - she has a history of doing it. I dont see why they are wasting their money. She came out of it the best.

As far as i know as a private seller you would not have to accept returns and also you do not have to pay for the postage if you do decide to accept a return.I stand to be corrected on this.

My money was frozen as soon as the buyer opened a dispute. I would advise to be polite but state your case in all emails to the seller & you could be lucky - i was.

It only gives me the option to give her "positive" feedback. I have considered writing something negative in there but im sure they will see it and its a mark against me and also she will still have her 100% positive rating and thats all people look at really.

Really? I've honestly never seen feedback restricted in that way. Makes a mockery of the rating system. Wonder how other sellers could give her honest feedback and you couldn't? Trading online is becoming a very high risk venture these days. I wouldn't have the temperament for it.

It changed a few years you can only give positive feedback as a seller. More details here

It's getting worst as a seller on ebay as they go with the buyer in most disputes.

Thanks for that, it's (obviously) been a long time since I bought on Ebay. I sort of understand what they're trying to achieve as I was threatened with legal action for leaving negative feedback after non receipt of a CD (and no reply to my queries nor proof of postage) but this really does make it difficult for sellers to highlight buyers (which surely is the point of ratings) who abuse the system and ultimately makes Ebay a much riskier space to trade.

Totally agree - when i started on Ebay about 12 years ago it was a great market place. Now its wedged with scammers and people selling tat.

I think i will keep my account but only use it for buying. Its a pity as i was able to sell items to a larger market with Ebay - things like designer clothes etc. Now i will just have to be more careful with what i purchase so i wont have the need to sell them on!

I looked for an option to give feedback on the whole dispute but there was no option. I wanted to tell Ebay that i felt it was wrong that even though they found i was not at fault (meaning the buyer was) that she ended up with a designer purse and also the money she paid for it. It encourages that behaviour.
