Having perennial short game trouble. Ive had the lessons, done the practice etc. But it's not getting any better. Generally hitting the ball well and I love my hybrids. The other day I decided to hit a pitch and run with my 22' hybrid. Now hit it a bit hard but it was better than id do with a short iron/wedge. I see you can now get hybrids down to lob wedge. Should I go down this line? Things so bad i was even looking up "chippers" 😢

You wouldn't consider taking up hockey?

The thing is if my long game was half as bad as my chipping I would have packed it in ages ago but it's quite good so I can actually still get it around without being able to chip. Plus my home course is links so on a dry day you can just take out the putter and give it a whack.
    Plus I hate hockey

Why do you think a hybrid with a wedge loft will be any different than a wedge.

I've played with a number of people who'll use a hybrid like a putter from around the greens to play a bump & run.

When you say you've put the practice in, exactly how much practice do you put in?

I don't have a great short game, it's a serviceable level of skill. But I put very little work in to that part of my game. For me the biggest issue I see with most people is a combination of confidence & commitment to the shot.

I play my best short game stuff when I'm committing fully to the shot & ensure that I'm accelerating through the ball. I might over hit a few, but that usually has a better outcome than a scuffed, scoopy, half-effort

First one-same reason i can hit a 3 hybrid and not a 3 iron I suppose. A combination of forgiveness and psychology I think.

Practicewise it's sporadic but the problem is it usually degenerates into a flubfest so I leave the practice ground with less confidence than I started. Ive had lessons and practiced after those.

    Yes

No if you are hitting your irons well.
I use my highest lofted utility as I put no check on it so know how it will roll out.
I find when using a iron I get spin which makes it harder to judge depending on how soft or hard the green is.

Think you maybe talking more pitching than chipping, you can putt most shots from off the green on a links or use the hybrid.
Don't think a 50 degree utility would be any use on bear links turf, it's less bounce u need not more.

7 iron my friend, just use it like a putter, don't try and "chip"

And how did it go ?

Fine at the lessons but deteriorated rapidly during practice and wasn't able to bring it onto course

    Chipping or putting stance?

Nothing wrong with using a hybrid for chips but you'll struggle when you need a high pitching shot which stops quickly.

What happens when you try to chip? Do you hit thin or fat or what? What length of shot do you struggle with?
When you said that you have practiced........how much as it takes longer than you think.

My advice is to setup a shortish practice area at home and use plastic "wiffle" balls. Then practice and practice and practice for months until you find a method that works and gives you confidence. Without seeing your swing I'd guess that you use your hands too much.

Years back I read that some pros (USA) changed to irons with thinner soles and no bounce for the British Open.
Irons with broad soles and plenty of bounce were fine for lush parkland courses.
It might just be that links turf tight lies make it difficult to chip and pitch with your clubs.

The thing about lessons though is to get one, walk away and take something from it. Then practice. Then go back.
