If you got to the main Alien: Covenant thread, there's lots of discussion about the merits, or lack thereof, of Prometheus. IMO, the continued level of discussion it attracts at least demonstrates that if nothing else it's a memorable film, which is more than can be said for the majority of blockbusters these days. It has deep flaws, and for some they're dealbreakers, but it still has its plus points.

Your mileage will vary. Should you watch it? Why not, the worst that can happen is you spend 2 hours watching a film you didn't like, it's no big loss. *shrug*

Look, you won't hate it. If you enjoy watching sci-fi movies, then you won't find yourself dying to turn it off halfway through. The effects are solid, the mood is solid, the writing if a little sloppy, isn't corny or ridiculous.
At the end though you'll likely find yourself a little confused and empty about the all the answers the movie didn't give.

At that stage, go reading up Trivia on IMDB and watching the deleted scenes on youtube and you'll find the whole thing making more sense.

Will you need to have seen it for Covenant? Probably not, but I expect it'll help at least for part of the movie. I gather it's less of a direct sequel and more of a crossover.

One thing about Prometheus - and I am a huge critic of the film.

The visuals and soundtrack are fantastic - some moments have great atmosphere and the acting by that Irish German lad who I cant quite remember his name is top.

Sadly this is where it ends, the threat is nonsense and the "Alien" is a load of ****e...

I was very happy with Prometheus. I really enjoy it, and I've watched it many times.

I think maybe some people took completely the wrong way about how it was to be a prequel. I went in with the assumption, knowing Scott had mentioned a trilogy that is was probably going to be a setup that would develop over the course of three films. I think people got annoyed expecting to immediately see an Alien or something.

I don't fully understand how fans of that universe were disappointed with the film. I keep watching it and keep getting baffled by it.

Even know, knowing that storyline is likely canned, it's still a great watch if you take it as a standalone film, taking some nods to the clear Alien universe it operates in.

It's a bit disappointing as an Alien film because the expectations are higher, but compared to the majority of Sci-Fi movies its excellent. Just watch it you have nothing to lose.

Really enjoyed Prometheus. Have watched it about six times and each viewing adds something which wasn't obvious before.
Loved the whole film, with the possible exception of Guy Pearce's character.
Thought it was nearer the mood of the original (and best) film and not so much a shoot-em-up action packed gung-ho movie, as Cameron's sequal was.
Would definitely recommend watching before Covenent lands.

If you managed to make it through 'Alien: Resurrection' without scooping your eyeballs out of your face, you should be ok.

    Switch your brain off though.

    No, really...switch it off.

Prometheus is a bisexual man at a lesbian orgy, where does he fit it?

He's a perfectly fine individual but is looking at something awesome.

No need to switch your brain off
The criticism of this movie has been blown way out of proportion

the supposedly intellectually superior Arrival and Interstellar are both enjoyable but also both ridiculous and filled with way more dumb moments

But Prometheus, oh leave your brain at the door, ha

While there are one or two poor lines in the movie, I personally thought it was a thought provoking movie with some great ideas. It was certainly food for thought

I believe the flaws of this movie have been blown way out of proportion, as opposed to the other movies I have mentioned, due to the alien fanboys initial reaction to the movie. It has just snowballed from there, and then Prometheus was the movie that was ok to tear apart.

Prometheus: scientist tries to befriend a worm, most ridiculous movie of all time

Alien: man looks into giant egg which has just opened, greatest science fiction moment of all time

The script is littered with stupid moments characters do the dumbest things simply to move the plot along. They have been rightly crtiicised.

While 'Alien' has its flaws (and looking at an egg isn't one of them), it's by far, very far, the better film.

We don't agree on this movie, let's just leave it at that.

Very enjoyable movie. It had its faults with the writing but a good premise with some great effects and imagery, Bring on Covenant

Prometheus was one of the stupidest films I've ever seen.

Ultimately when you have varied opinions coming out about a movie, relying on IMDB ratings I find are a good fall back. John Wick is a good example - I heard barely a whisper about this when it was released, nobody saying much about it.

But online there are people crazy about it, love the movie. So I watched it. Pretty ridiculous movie, but enjoyable. IMDB rating is 7.2, which is spot on; I would probably watch it if it was on TV, but I wouldn't go get comfy and sit down to watch it again.

Prometheus - 7.0. That's right on the cusp of of the ridiculous/enjoyable balance.

To me it would be more like a 4/10.

I'll give it points for its visuals, but the content is a let down. It has very poor characters and a series of scenarios that border on insulting. It also does a lot to destroy the Alien universe too, by reducing much of the mystery that original film's created down to quite insipid "explanations".

'Prometheus', I think, would have worked best as entirely its own film, totally unconnected to Alien. I think that way they could have built on the story properly. The central idea that we could find a map to our makers only to discover that they were dicks is pretty good. But 'Prometheus' doesn't really go anywhere with it. So, even without the shoddy, tacked on, Alien connection, it would still be a let down in many ways.

To me it ends up being just another wasted opportunity, unfortunately.

It's also looking like a lot of the questions posed in the film and the sequel set up at the finale are being jettisoned in 'Alien: Covenant'. Not entirely sure of that, but it looks that way. Noomi Rapace may show up for 10 minutes and give some exposition on what she's been doing, but I don't think we'll get much more than that.

I watched this again on Friday. 1st time I've seen it since I went to the cinema to see it on the original release.
I didn't find it as bad as others. It certainly isn't a patch on the original but certainly far better than Alien Resurrection and the AVP films. I was fine with the unanswered questions. I see it as leaving the door open to have a longer story arc. I'm hoping that some of these threads are developed further in the new film.

I'm in the "meh" camp on Prometheus; I think it looks and aounds fantastic, but has a script with so many characters having to do outright stupid things (despite the dialogue telling us that they're supposed to be smart and competent and yada yada yada) that for me it drops from great to "pretty good if you ignore the Idiot Ball moments".

Having said that, if you do watch it, I'd suggest seeking out one of the fanedits that seek to reinsert the deleted scenes (amongst other things). Agent9's Special Edition was very very good, and Giftbearer (by a faneditor whose name I forget) is also pretty good.

I was not impressed in 2012 and given 'Alien: Covenant' sidelines the main story of 'Prometheus', fans of the first prequel cannot be happy.
