Height of Dogs

I was looking up the definition of standard deviation and came upon this website

    http://www.mathsisfun.com/data/standard-deviation.html

Now I don't often argue with the definitions found on websites but the example they gave was the standard deviation of the height of dogs (?) and they measured the height of these dogs as per the below image
    statistics-dogs-graph.gif

Am I crazy in thinking that this doesn't make sense?

What doesn't make sense? It says there, they're measuring the height at the shoulder.

The standard deviation is the amount each component part of the sample differs from the average of the group. Straightforward enough.

Animals are measured from shoulder height.

The dogs are sitting differently though, will that make any difference? (if we take this seriously)

Correct, horses are measured to the withers, or shoulder, as well.

I judge the height of a dog by how low I have to go to pet them.

I judge dogs on their political beliefs.

If Dwayne Johnson is studying his family history, is it called genealogy or geology?

Why do you hear of celebrities dying, but you never hear of them being born?

Generally not. The distance from the shoulder to the ground is constant whether the dog is standing or sitting on its hind quarters. In most quadrupeds, there is less flexibility in the front legs than the hind legs (their elbow is very close to their torso), so taking measurement from the shoulder provides the most reliable outcome.

Which came first, the fame or the birth?

    Doesn't seem fair.

"The height of dogs" sounds like a fancy way of saying "the dogs bollox".

Are their front legs perpendicular to the floor when sitting, though?

I accept that the height-of-all-dogs-everywhere will have a mean and SD, but I'd suggest that more restricted samples of each breed, e.g. height of Alsatians, height of Jack Russels, would adhere better to the Normal distribution bell-curve.
