Smell from Pedestal Trap

    Hi all,

I’ve got a banging smell coming from the sink in the en-suite.
At first I thought it was siphonage, so I was running the taps after each flush of the jacks and using a drain declogging product when the smell got really bad.

This seemed to do the trick for a number of months but lately the smell is back with a vengeance and there’s no shifting it. It also turns out that the trap is a pedestal type one which uses a diaphragm type system (link below) as opposed to the traditional water in the u-bend to block returning gases, which rules out siphonage of the trap.

Anybody have any experience with these type of traps? It’s been there for about 10 years so maybe it’s a life span issue or else the diaphragm has disintegrated thanks to my declogging regime.

It looks like it’ll be an absolute bollix to replace so hoping to get a bit of advice before I attempt to go messing with it.

Note to self: The smell was gone most of the summer but is back recently, must be a cold weather thing

(similar post from Feb 2015, looks like def a Winter thing)
