The Five Second Rule

A germ expert, Professor Anthony Hilton, says that the five-second rule is real and plans to showcase how it works at The Big Bang Fair in Birmingham.

In his interview he seems to backtrack somewhat with quotes like:

“Eating food that has spent a few moments on the floor can never be entirely risk-free."

"That is not to say that germs can't transfer from the floor to the food."

But I suppose he has to cover himself somewhat so that he doesn't end up getting sued...

A survey of 2,000 people found that 79% of people admitted to eating food that had fallen on the floor. So, AH, are you one of those that'll dust something off and pop it in your mouth? Or is it going in the bin? I'll typically bin it to be honest!

Sci show covered it a couple weeks back. As with many things it seems it is not a case of whether the rule is "real" or not - so much as it applies in some cases and not in others.

The trusty 5 second rule! Only to be beaten by the stalwart 10 second rule.

    Depends on the food.

Dropping a blob of jelly on the ground will collect much more dirt than dry toast.

    Umm floor jelly

If it falls on the floor the dog gets it.
The fcuker usually has it gone before I can pick it up anyway.

I suppose that there needs to be a definition of the food type as well. I imagine this only applies to solid foods. Like, if you drop a bit of gooey scrambled egg on the floor or porridge, they are no-no's as they absorb germs in less than a second due to the goo like consistency.

trumps pulling the healthcare plan so that people who exceed the 5 second rule are not covered and will die of their desire to eat floor food.

And if you do get ill from eating off the floor whilst pregnant, you might die because they will deny you any treatment that threatens the baby. Boom, we did it!

What if germs transfer from the food to the floor? :pac:

Used to pick up stuff and eat it well after 5 seconds in our house, but since the dog arrived no one does it any more.

When we were kids we would even eat mud cakes, not to mention something that fell on the floor, now we are all too conscious of diseases and cleanliness. I'm not saying its a bad thing (sometimes i'm a bit of a neat freak) but for children is good to play with dirt so that their immunological system can get stronger into fighting all sorts of things.

That was the way i was raised among other kids nearby me and never had allergy issues. A cousin of mine that lived in some sort of bubble has all kinds of allergies.

Scambled eggs or porridge should be warm enough to kill the germs, or else they've been lieing about cooking making food safe to eat.

Getting milk back in the carton within 5 seconds is a challenge.

I always have a hose on standby in the kitchen for this syphoning purpose.

But never mix it up with your petrol syphoning hose.
