I’m on the verge of signing up for IMRA but was thinking I’d like to do a few mountain runs myself to make sure I’m able for the steep ascents before committing to a race. I have a car but I like the idea of leaving it at home (which also gives me the option of having a post-run pint or 2 after).

I see there’s the 44b but it doesn’t run on weekends which is when I’d have the time.

Where are good areas to start from that are near to bus or luas stops?

Go to Marlay Park, and it's only a few k (with some good uphills) to Kilmashogue, and you'll find plenty more ascents there

If you don't intend to run the weekday races and concentrate on weekend, you're generally looking at the more difficult championship races at this time of year which benefit from having a bit of experience, and they tend to be nowhere near public transport.

Get to know a few people midweek, or throw it up on the IMRA forum, and you may be able to carpool to the races.

edit: I may have misunderstood you, you're probably talking about public transport for your run, as opposed to the race.

Yeah just so I can head down at my own time and do some practice. When it comes to an actual race I'll either drive or carpool.

Yeah I definitely will in the near future. I was tempted to sign up for the 25.5km on March 25th. I've done a couple of 21km but with every little elevation. 25.5 on a mountain may be too much for a noob. But yeah, I can't wait to partake is some IMRA races.

Dart to Howth for easy access to 8mile Bog of Frogs loop and other trails. Dart to Bray or Greystones for cliff path and Bray Head

You could get the luas to Laughanstown and run the road a few K to Pucks Castle Lane and join the Dublin Mountains Way there

+1 to that, and a decent climb up from Laughanstown to Carrickgollogan.

Or the DART to Shankill, short jog to the start of the Dublin Mountains Way near Brady's pub (and then Rathmichael Wood, Carrickgollogan, Barnaslingan are all within reach).

    Bray Cliff Walk to Greystones.

    Access by Dart.

Good path and stunning coastal views.
