Hi everyone does anybody have any idea what it would cost to buy a new alternator and have it fitted on to a 00 Ford Focus?

Ring a few breakers I'd say. Or get yours reconditioned. Fitting it isn't difficult.

If you plan to keep the car then reconditioned is a better option in the long run.

Because you don't know what condition the second hand unit is in when it came out of the last car, it could last you only a month and then you're back to square one. A reconditioned one is self explanatory and will come with a guarantee. Penny wise, pound foolish and all that.

Great thanks everyone for your help. My mechanic gave it a knock of a hammer a few weeks ago and it was back running perfect. Went into the petrol station this evening and came back out and wouldn't start. Time to get a new one

Its not the alternator that needs a knock of a hammer...
