BMW E46 coupe 318ci - fuel tank repair

    Hi,

I can fill my fuel tank but when it's over half-way it leaks when it's leaning to the right primarily. It also leaks when I'm actually filling the tank but again only leaks when it goes over halfway. There is also strong smell of petrol in the car when I fill over half. I've been doing half tanks but it's getting tiresome. Does anyone know where the leak might be coming from? Thanks in advance!

    The tank may be ruptured.
    Tanks are not really repairable.

Wherever it is, I would advise against driving it until you have received sorted it. Petrol could potentially leak onto the exhaust or another hit part.

Thanks for the advice. If you have an idea, how difficult would it be to replace the tank? The tank is fairly unrestricted apart from the driveshaft and exhaust. I have a pit that I could work on the car but lift would obviously be better.

The leak is likely coming from the fuel level sender unit, could be an easy enough fix. It would be extremely unusual for the tank to have ruptured

I've seen that as an issue with these cars alright but it doesn't leak when it's running apart from any left turn I take of course, unless I'm not understanding the nature of the leak (likely). Thanks for the reply!
