    Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a car for, mainly, to and from work and run around car. Work is only 12km from home.

The Seat Leon 1.6 TDI SE Ecomotive Technology is meant to be very economical and low tax. My budget would be about €7k.

I'd like something with a v comfortable interior (not a deal breaker but would be nice), steering wheel controls, economical to run & cheap to tax.

I'm coming from a 09 Saab 93 diesel- v comfortable but not that fuel efficient & €570 tax
Anyone have any suggestions/comments on the Seat or something else? I also don't mind if it's something larger, like the Skoda Octavia Greenline III TDi if it's not more expensive to run, tax etc.

    Thanks,
    Pa.

How much of that 12 km commute to work is stop/start? If most of that is stop/start driving then no diesel car will give much in the way of improved fuel economy. Diesels take longer to warm up so 12 km of mostly stuck in traffic will not benefit you. Have you considered a hybrid?

If traffic is busy I take a different route- country road with bends so not flying along but moving.
Could you get a hybrid fir €7k?I'd have thought not.

What Leon are you getting for 7k? Does the 7k include what you get for the 9-3 or 7k plus the 9-3?

    €7k total...
Fair point about diesel for short trips.

Maybe I should have titled thread 'comfortable, runaround, low running cost car for €7k'

I got the Seat from http://m.independent.ie/life/motoring/car-news/after-testing-282-cars-heres-what-the-experts-found-to-be-most-economical-30887001.html

    Thanks

You won't get one of those Leon's for anywhere close to €7000.

I'm realising that now. Looking at it now - decent, economical run around for €7k instead.

Unless you're 9-3 is causing alot of trouble your not really going to gain much with a budget of 7k all in. That 7k would buy alot of diesel and tax for your existing 9-3.

Something like this might be close to what your looking at:

I was searching for Kia Ceeds petrol in Galway and stumbled across this.

    Kia Rio, petrol, 2009, 50,000km. €8,945.
    Road tax €200.
    steering wheel controls, bluetooth, A/C.
Interior is grand but most around that price seem very similar- cloth, no central console etc.

I know it's above my original budget but it seemed nice, took it for a short spin.

There was an article 8n paper recently re this topic, with €7k budget. Indo I think. Their suggestions were :
    Honda Civic 1.4 petrol
    Toyota Auris
    Hyundai i30
    Kia Ceed.
