First step is to locate and check level of power steering fluid.
    Replace this anyway.

Does car groan on full lock?

Have you checked the fluid level ? can you here it groaning as you are locking the wheels.

Do you have the yellow steering wheel symbol on the dash?

You will be a long time looking for a power steering fluid reservoir on a B6 Passat because the system is electric ;)

The problem could be something as simple as the system having lost it's limit stop settings, or worst case scenario it could need a replacement steering rack.

Ok, if a warning is on the dash this means that there is an error code that can be read.

What's this about a pump? George Dalton said it's an electrical system and I think he could be right... or is it the half-way type in which an electric pump drives the fluid.
