    is overtime a thing anymore?

I dont mean in tesco or a steel foundry or anything, but in real jobs that people have these days.

As in I dont mean extra hours added to your roster or whatever, but having to stay late to get something done and expecting to get paid for it.

Does that still exist or as it a pre-eighties thing

I make a lot of money off overtime - whether it being my own stuff being busy or covering other people's items while they are out.

We get time-and-a-half for OT and I did 10 hours of it in January. It's a big boost to my paycheck to be fair and I have no problem doing it. I'm never 'forced' to do it however and wouldn't do it if I wasn't getting the extra money.

A friend of mine works in a bank call centre.

He gets paid for every hour of over time at normal rate but also gets an hour off in lieu of it as a bonus.

He goes in an hour early every morning, there's nothing to be done at that time so he has breakfast and reads, then every second week he takes Monday or Friday off with the time he's built up.

I am self employed for the past 7 yrs and much prefer it. You can focus on getting a job done and you are not expected to hang around until quitting time just to follow rules and keep a boss happy.

I do all my promotion and booking stuff and all my admin from home which is handy.

I do not have to get stuck in traffic as the hours are outside the usual 9 - 5 rat race.

I would not consider working outside the usual hours unless compensated for it either by TOIL or direct pay. 1.5 x on workdays and 2 x on weekends as was the usual practice.

You will find very few employers who will work for free or small change and the same should be for workers unless there is a training or knowledge benefit to be got from the work which can happen at times.
