Overpaid by employer

Hi just wanted some advice, i worked in the UK for the NHS for just over two years. I moved back to Ireland May 2016 but i went back to visit in march of this year they were letters from my employer saying that i was overpaid by £900, it was then passed on to a solicitor and they had sent letters also advising they were chasing the debt. Obviously if i had known about the overpayment i would have paid it back straight away. My question is do I contact my employer and explain the situation or will they say the matter has gone to solicitors and i will have to pay legal fees on top of outstanding overpayment? Not sure where I stand legally i have no issues paying it back but obviously i was not aware of the issue and i was no longer living the UK.

Depending on what you want to happen, but assuming you want to pay it back. Contact the employer first, they may say it's passed on somewhere else, but contact them, as that will be the simplest way to resolve it.

If you have to deal with solicitors etc, agree to pay the £900 back but you are not paying for any legal fees, put this in writing and register it, assuming it goes that far.
