Low value trade in

I'm just wondering if dealers tend to do low value trade in's. Our current car is a 2l diesel, I'd say worth about 1300. My husband has gotten a work van and I just cannot afford to keep the car on the road (tax is out etc). I'd like to get a 1 or 1.2l car and have seen some that would do, from traders, on donedeal for 700 - 1000. Is there any point in checking if they'd be interested in a swap? Or would I be laughed off the phone/ out of the shop?

Buying a car for so little off a trader is generally bad idea as your usually dealing with the bottom of the barrel. You would be very unlikely to have any sort of meaningful comeback if the car is a baddun, and because they do this for a living, they'll be better at selling than you are at buying.
Much better to buy a cheap car from the owner rather than someone flipping it.

Why not put your own car up for sale and see what happens?

That makes a lot of sense! Thanks.

We live in a small village and everything I need to get to requires a car, I'd rather not be without one if I can help it - although we would manage if we had to and what you say makes sense.

There is no harm in asking although I suspect every dealer will want some cash their way regardless of what you value your car at and what the car they have for sale is priced at, that's just the nature of their business.

If the cars you are looking at have reasonable miles and are NCT'd then why not, it'll cost you less to run and tax and even if you only got a couple of years out of it, you'd have your money's worth out of it at that stage.
