Awful ping

I'm having a weird issue tonight, I'm getting incredibly bad ping whenever I try to play anything online. 150 or thereabouts is the lowest I've seen it go with a UK server in Mount & Blade Warband, and a Battlefield 1 server in Denmark had around 300 or so... and that's the lowest ping option on the list.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Only a few hours ago everything was fine. Am on Vodafone ADSL, down in Cork.

Problem seems to have resolved itself this morning. Not sure what it was, we had reset the router several times and it showed minimal activity down or up when seeing high pings, so I don't think the problem was on our side.

Happening again now... no activity on the router, nobody else in the apartment, pings of over 100 when they're usually around 40.

Edit - Vodafone can't see anything wrong with the line, it must be my modem, blah blah...

Ping your router first, is that ok or terrible?

You arent running a VPN perhaps?

    Thanks for posting!

Pinging the router returns a time of 1ms. Not running a VPN, no.

You can tracert to continental europe to see where the problem might be but its really up to Leopardstown to fix whenever they're so inclined.

I thought it might be something like this as running a speedtest on speedtest.net returned a ping of 26ms on "Blacknight Carlow", pinging met.ie gives around the same while pinging bbc.co.uk gives me an average return of 76ms.

What's up in Leopardstown and why are they slow to fix these things? Why am I the only one complaining about it? I mentioned to the Vodafone rep that the problem wasn't to do with my connection or router, that it was not local to me, but he assured me there wasn't any such issues with connection to the UK or Europe. Of course I doubt he has access to that information and just wanted me to get off the line but I thought it worth asking.

Edit - Look at this nonsense...

Couple of threads both here on boards.ie and vodafone's own community forum on the vodafone.ie website about the exact same issue. So it has at least been raised with them.

Problem is the various department's in vodafone don't appear to communicate with each other so you could be waiting a fair while before any resolution is forthcoming.

Problem is likely off the Wexford coast and a few km down. This has come up previously (this month, 2014 and 2012 IIRC).

Depending on severity it can require a small fleet of ships and a few months to fix. The alternative is another link is down/degraded and an endpoint change will bring it up quickly.

Cheers guys. Here's hoping they sort this out sooner rather than later.

Just as an update, the thread for this on the Vodafone forum has seen this message, where they are aware of the issue.

Testing tonight, pings to the UK are perfectly fine, which is progress I guess, but still bad for anything on the continent.
