Quick rundown on shallow geothermal

I've seen a few queries about shallow geothermal on this forum, so I dug out this review by the Geological Survey on advice for homeowners on the topic.

Ive always thought that geothermal is much less understandable than solar or wind as you can feel the heat and breeze, but no such tangible effect is apparent in geothermal. . However Shallow geothermal is ideally suited to ireland with our warm summers and mild winters. It is vital to remember that shallow geothermal uses the body of rock as a battery to store summer warmth in the ground for the winter season. The subsurface in Ireland is about 9 degrees all year round, and it's this effect that geothermal exploits.

THe key issue has been correct practices, with a lot of bad work been done in the boom days. New practices involve correct system sizing brought about by a thorough understanding of the rock thermal values into which the system is being installed

Recent work such as this project set out to de-risk geothermal projects by increasing the knowledge of irish ground conditions.

This project is an example of solar and geothermal in a hybrid system in a new build in Wicklow.

I hope this little post might encourage others to look at the oft ignored field of shallow geothermal, and I'd be happy to answer any other questions on the topic here or in PM.
