Is there a ballpark figure of how many photos a modern DSLR can be expected to take? I think I'm on about 9800 and looking to trade up to a new one.

9800 is only warming up !

There's no definitive answer but shutters normally exceed their expected life span. The life span varies from camera to camera but generally average around 100,000 or higher. AFAIR on the Nikon D3s it's 250,000. One of mine has 307,000 clicks and is still going strong whilst the other has 71,500. I bought that one second hand though and I know Nikon had it back to 'fix an undetermined issue' so that might be a replacement shutter.

I'm coming up on 74,000 clicks on canon and it's still going perfect.

Saw a post online recently of a guy who has racked up around half a million clicks on his Nikon D750 (shutter life is supposedly around 150,000) and it's still going strong.

    I average around 85,000 a year.

Only once have I had a shutter fail and had to be replaced. Once replaced it's like a whole new engine in a car.

So, taking lots of photos is never something I worry about.

If you are selling on, depending on the camera, around 50,000 actuations is a good point to sell. Most people will still consider there to be some good life left in the average DSLR at that point. They are typically rated for 150,000, but will more than likely exceed that. Some newer cameras such as the Sony A7RII are rated at 500,000.

I used to shoot for a company who worked their cameras hard. They would have new shutters put in whenthey failed.

In Berlin I had two bodies fail on me, one due to the shutter and the other from a loose reflex mirror. I still shot almost 5000 images on it. Got a replacement body and a new location and then shot more than 11000 images on it. Was over the 16000 mark for the day.
