My poor little elderly dog with health problems has diarrhoea. Vet said to give her boiled chicken and rice and natural yogurt. I wonder which 'natural yogurt' should I buy for her in Tesco?. Any suggestions?. Thanks so much.

Hi dinky. Sorry to hear about your poor doggy. Any natural yoghurt really would be fine but maybe something like the glenisk one would be better.
Do they know what's causing the issue? It might be good to try and source what's causing it.

Andreac thank you so much for your reply. I just checked glenisk yogurts now on internet - there is a 'Natural o% Greek Protein Yogurt' - would that be the one I should get?. She has a high grade murmur and bad heart and a lot of fluid in her abdomen. She is on Cardisure and then the vet also put her on Benazecare as well a few days ago and suggested that I put her on rice and chicken. It is then that the diarrhoea started. I contacted him and he said to try a natural yogurt as well. I thought it might be the chicken that was causing the diarrhoea but he said no. I will try the glenisk to see if it makes a difference. Would the Greek Protein one be the one to get? Many thanks again.

Natural yoghurts full of sugar. Surely that not good. Maybe a proper greek yoghurt. Not 'greek style' which is just thickened natural yoghurt

I wouldn't go for a 0% fat one. Just go for the normal natural yoghurt. Try to stay away from fat free ones as they are usually replaced with diff ingredients. If glenisk don't have a normal natural then just go for a different brand.
You could also try her on a white fish and rice too ìf you think it could be the chicken. Hopefully she feels a bit better soon. How's her form otherwise?

Andreac thank you for your reply. I feel so STUPID. I wonder could you suggest a normal natural yogurt that I could buy?. When I checked the internet for glenisk the only one that wasn't 'natural' was the 0% one - so glenisk would not be ok then.I will get some white fish as you suggest and try that instead of the chicken for a day or two. She is with me all the time - her confidence is gone but her quality of life if still there. She is a little fighter.

Sorry when I meant normal I meant not the fat free one so any brand really. Even the tesco one would be fine. Just don't get a fat free one.
It could be the medication she's on that's causing the issue but no harm in giving her something plain like that to see would it help it a little.

Thanks a million andreac. I will head out to Tesco now. Yes, I am wondering if it might be the new medication that was added. You are extremely kind. Have a nice weekend.

Thank you eoinzy2000 for explaining the difference between Greek and Greek style yogurts. I don't eat yogurt so that is why I am so ignorant about it!.

OP, I had a very elderly terrier with major health problems, so I feel for you.
Some dogs are, surprisingly, not able to tolerate chicken - seems amazing doesnt it. (Duck is good for allergic type dogs. Lamb is usually good too) I used to buy a bag of frozen white fish fillets - in the Tesco freezer cabinets - very cheap - I would boil some rice, and add the fish when half done so that the fish doesnt disintegrate.

The point of giving your dog yogurt is to provide some PROBIOTICS for his gut - someone on here (TK123?) uses a probiotic from a healthfood store, which is added to the dogs food, to help with healthy bacteria in the stomach. If your dog wont eat yogurt you could try this powder? I used to mix any probiotic plain yogurt (brand doesnt matter, just look for Probiotic and plain) to Peppers food when it cooled, sometimes he would lick a spoon of the yogurt on its own, its nice and cooling. Full fat ones (rather than 0% or low fat) are more appetising, and will provide a bit of protein. There are lactose-free yogurts too, but you may not be able to find.

How old is your dog? Breed?

Aonb thank you for your very kind reply. My little dog is a Jack Russell who was a cruelty case - taken away by the guards and put into the Pound. She was in terrible condition having been kicked in the back leg and ear drums broken (so she is deaf).I have her 6 years now and the vet thinks that she is approx. 16 years old. I will buy the white fish and boil it for her as I think she may not be able to tolerate the chicken. I can well understand what you went through with your little terrier having major health problems. I am so sorry. Thank you again.

How is your doggy now Dinky? Any improvement at all?

andreac - thank you. I started her on the natural yogurt and white fish and rice. The diarrhoea did improve but her stool became messy i.e. not formed. I brought her back to the vet yesterday and he gave me a tub of Pro Fiber. I am to mix a spoon of it with her dinner. He said to stop the yogurt when she is getting the Pro Fiber. He said also to give her a spoon of Milupa Baby Food. She is sleeping now. Many thanks again.
