Replacing Acers

In September 2015 I planted 2 acers in small beds which are a bit shaded from sun by house but exposed to westerly winds. They both died in their first winter and I now need to replace them! Would appreciate advice on replacement trees which wont grow too big and would thrive in a windy slightly shaded locatio. Thanks

Acers don't mind shaded, but they do not like wind. How big is too big? Would you be better with shrubs?

See below a picture of the 2 beds in which the acers were planted. Both are at front of the house facing north but exposed to westerly wind.
