    Hello All,

A lad I work with is a mechanic. He's going to plug his BMW computer into my car to see what exactly is wrong with it, before I actually bring it to a garage.
He no longer works as a mechanic himself.

Basically my question is, how much should I be giving him for looking at the car?

Do you guys go out together at all? In that case maybe a pint and a whiskey.
He doesn't own the equipment does he?

He owns the computer/software yes. I'd never go out with him, no

A bottle of wine or something? But at the same time, no need to go overboard. If I offer to help someone with a relatively simple task like that, I wouldn't expect anything in return!

In my view, there's only so much to be gained by plugging in diagnostics. Plug a laptop into any E-series 2004+ BMW that's never been connected before and you'll see a library of errors generated over the years.

Ideally he should plug it in, clear all codes and then drive the car for a couple of hundred miles and then re-read, which is usually impossible.

On how much to pay, depends on how far he has to come, how long he spends at it etc. €30-50 would be middle ground if he has to travel I reckon, bearing in mind he likely got the software illegally as many do.
