How to become a licenced aircraft maintenance engineer

I'm 29 and have worked in automotive manufacturing pretty much since graduating in 2010. I'm now considering a career change, for lots of reasons, and aircraft maintenance is something I've always been interested in, I did my final year project on it.

Can anyone tell me the best way to go about gaining experience? Is it a case of getting an apprenticeship while studying for your EASA part 66 at the same time? I know it could mean a big pay cut, but I keep coming back to this every few months and I'd love to just go for it :)

How much does a licenced maintenance engineer make after say 3 years? Thanks!

Apprenticeship! You can study the Part 66 modules but they're useless without the practical experience.

To be honest If i were you I'd stay away from it as a career,at 29 now you realisitcally wont finish an apprenticeship til 33/34 then another while before you get type rated and experienced to certify aircraft,Weigh up how much salary you would lose, its not worth it imho.I love doing the job but somewhat disillusioned with the industry in Ireland, the pay isn't good enough with most irish companies, you'd need to travel/contract to make real money.Sorry to be negative but thats the way its gone here since certain individuals brought in ****tier terms etc
If I were at a career change i'd go along an IT route...
