Peugeot 307 coolant

    Hi there,

I own a 2006 Peugeot 307. Head gasket got replaced about two months ago. Was told to keep an eye on the coolant. Haven't done so in the past two weeks. This morning, after I parked, the engine was cooling down (something it hasn't done since before the head gasket replacement). Checked the coolant reservoir this evening a few hours after and it was completely empty.
Wasn't sure what to do, and the car didn't come with a manual (it was a bad buy, I know that now!) so I went to my local Applegreen and picked up some of their generic coolant. I put a litre in and it went straight down. So still not enough I assume. Just wondering should I go buy and put more coolant into it, or water until it reaches the MAX mark?
I'll realistically have to bring it to a mechanic since I really don't know a thing about cars, you can probably tell that from this post. Any help would be appreciated, need to go for a long spin next weekend so need to get it sorted. Thanks!

For now just use tap water (preferable distilled but hey..). If there is such a leak it vanishes quickly there is no need to waste expensive coolant.

Is car smoky at all, on startup or driving? Colour?

If you park indoor stick a newspaper underneath to check for stains the next morning

Get cooling system pressure tested if you can find a local mech that has the equipment.

I'm assuming it'll take a few litres perhaps? And that's okay to use that amount of water?

No, the car seems to be fine otherwise. Didn't give me a warning light or anything and no smoke.

Keep an eye on temp gauge and don't let the engine overheat. Keep a container of water in the car in case of emergency .

Change back to coolant in September / October . Stop immediately if you get the warning light
