    hi all
i made a log splitter a few years ago works great
im now in the process of working off an electric motor and hydraulic pump
    works well
    got both for free
3hp single phase motor and pump off a combine
i have been fiddling with different size pullys
and if i use an 8 inch pully on the motor i can stop it with a very hard log

it wont stop with a 6 inch one
but it is slightly faster with the 8 inch
and i was wondering if it would be worth putting a flywheel on the setup
but it woul have to be brought in slowly to allow the motor to pick up speed first
    any help or advice apprecaiated
    john

You seem to be at the capacity of the 3hp motor. You can't go much bigger usually on single phase than 3.5 usually. If you wanted more speed you need a tractor to run it, or look for a small Honda engine or similar.
Someone with a better understanding of hydraulic theory would be better able to advise you.
