Would a 100amp alternator do the same job as 120amp stock?

    The 100 is cheaper....

2002 Diesel D4D avensis. totally standard.

    I'd imagine it's 120amp for a reason.

How much are you saving by going with the 100amp ?

Is there such a thing as a reconditioned alternator ?... that might be an option.

A place called Myles Balfe up at the Red Cow used to do reconditioned units.
I assume they are still there.

    How mechanically competent are you?
, if you are anyway reasonable buy a kit from Goldlion electronics Ebay store in Mayo and rebuild it yourself, there are plenty of videos on youtube and his delivery is fast and reliable in my experience.

    The simple answer is no.

Strangely enough, mine began acting up yesterday as well.
When lights and heater fan are on, charge light flashes as well as the diesel fuel filter drain symbol.
Hope to get one in a scrappy tomorrow, and will then get that kit from Mayo , fix its own.

They have different rating for a reason, don't you think?

I don't know yet. Got one from the scrappy, 60 euro, off a car three years newer than mine. Pig to change, you have to pull the bottom suspension ball joint, and unbolt the driveshaft carrier bearing and pull the driveshaft out of the gearbox. All to get enough room to bring down the alternator. Took me two and a half hours last Saturday.

Edit. Mine is an 03 model, yours may be a bit different. Was the alternator moved to the front of the engine on the 2007 model year?
If so, it'd be a twenty minute job.

I rebuilt the Alternator on a Mk1 I had again, a bitch of a job, on the 2CTE it was right at the back of the engine drivers side against the firewall and I had to rip a lot of stuff to drop it down and even then it was a tight fit and had to be manipulated to get it out.
