    Hi

I have a nail in my tyre (Looks more like a tac)

main dealer suggested I replace the tyre, (run flats) But there is still some thread left in it.

They stated that it would be illegal for them to repair it.

The tyre is not losing any air.

I'm gonna have it patched anyway.

    Opinions..

Edit.. the tyres are 275/40, so the tac isn't that close to the edge

Let us know how you get on with having it patched.
Seems strange it is not losing air, unless the tack is still in it.
    How did you notice it?

Indy type place will repair it, some other places will tell lies like "it's illegal" in order to sell you a new tyre.

Plenty of places will repair that but technically they shouldn't, runflats are not meant to be repaired. But I think if it was never driven while flat or with very low pressure then it should be fine. I think the unrepairable tag comes from the fact repaired tyres were proving too weak for reliable use in runflat mode once they were compromised

There's a large risk involved for zero gain for garages doing a repair on a tyre like that. That is on the shoulder of the tyre which is the most flexible part, which is the most likely area for a plug or patch to fail.

Most main dealers fix punctures for free, so if they fix it for free they gain nothing and get nothing in the way of kudos for doing the repair if it's a success but if the repair fails you can be sure the owner will be back looking for a new wheel and/ or tyre or slating the business online over poor workmanship.

That's the grim reality you have to consider with a puncture repair at a main dealer. It's not that they want to spin a line to sell a tyre they just know they can avoid any negative publicity by not doing a repair that they know is likely to fail.

Have to ask - how did you even spot that if its not losing air?

.So, took the plunge, and decided to pull out the nail/tac.

If it began losing air, I was going to have it patched.

So, after a little digging, this is what I pulled out.

That can't be what I think it is?Looks like a diamond.

    Even if it's fake....that's mad!

Ok I zoomed in and it's not a diamond.

Piece of glass.. that was all. It was just stuck in the thread block.

Now to be fair, it did look like a tac.

and i didnt cop the diamond like resemblance until you posted.

So the main dealer told you to replace a tyre that had a tiny bit of glass embedded?
Did your tyre loose air when glass removed?

    That's correct.

And there was no air loss.
The piece of glass was stuck in the thread block.

Had I left it in.. nothing would have happened.

And to be fair it's nice to see them giving the car a decent once over, many many main dealers wouldn't have even looked at the tyres

True, I'm surprised they saw it, but I'm wondering were they using a fine tooth comb in order to try and boost the bill up.

On my bill I noticed that screen wash was €20...

And the quote for 4 new tyres (continental) was €1,300
