How could my tooth break so easily

I felt the sensation that I had something stuck between my teeth. It was driving me crazy, I could feel it with my tongue, but couldn't see anything. Eventually, I placed my finger in my mouth and rubbed it against the teeth, I felt something kinda break off. There was no pain so I dismissed it. The following days my tooth began to throb and the gum, there is a slight ache in the back. Nothing unbearable, but annoying. I think the pain is getting more frequent and slightly more painful each day. I can't see behind my tooth, so I can't tell for sure if there is a hole in it from me rubbing my finger against it. But I can't believe my tooth would break that easily. What most likely is this?

Most likely scenario is that there is some decay that has weakened the tooth to the point of it being brittle... Then it doesn't take much to break it... The straw that breaks the camels back...!!

    Get it seen to OP...
