In our case all Bills remained in deceased name until we cancelled them. We cancelled phone and sky fairly quickly though. Electric is still in deceased name and they didn't seem to be too bothered about changing it when we mentioned it to them.
Is there anyone still living at the house?

Some utility companies won't cancel accounts unless provided with a death certificate. Once you have those (get as many as you can) it should be a very simple process of writing to them including account details, their copy of the certificate any the details you want the account put into or a termination date. Condolences on your loss.

Sorry for your loss. It is a tough time with all the practical crap to deal with. If there is a landline and you won't need it then cancel it. We didn't need to provide any death Cert. Even sky has a dedicated number for deceased accounts.

If the house has to go through probate then it needs to be maintained and secure for those few months. So electricity bills will have to be paid by executor going forward. Any oil, insurance, property tax (probably already up to date) will need to be paid by executor. House insurance will need to be informed that house is now vacant. Some won't insure again so you may need to shop around. Executor keeps receipts and is reimbursed from estate prior to estate being distributed. If you are the executor it might be an idea to change locks in case neighbours or any family (especially non beneficiaries) had a set of keys. This is to secure the property.

    Sorry for your loss.

There is some very useful information in the attached links about the practicalities, following a death. I hope that it helps.

Also, keep a close eye on the utility companies you contact. They seem to be staffed by script monkeys who say they'll do X and never do.
