Painting walls in old house.

Need to paint some walls in a 35 year old house. These walls haven't seen fresh paint in 35 years and the house was smoked in with windows closed so everything is brown and stinking.

Guess it's easier clean the walls than the roof?
Will a good cleaning do the trick? Will I need strip paint or anything. Can I clean the roof paint? Guessing stripping that would be a fairly tough job.
There's no damp anywhere or anything like that just brown walls and curtains and pretty much everything :)

Get sugar soap and give a good scrub.
    Sand down if needed.

Get decent paint and give at least 2 coats.

Painting the ceiling is simply a matter of using a long handled roller. Do the ceilings first and you don't need to worry too much about the roller slipping down onto the walls.

For the walls themselves, if they're greasy, sugar soap is your friend but if not, a quick brush down with a clean sweeping brush or a run over with the hoover will do.

Polyfilla is likely to be your friend in a house of that age, the pre-mixed stuff in the tubes is more expensive, but it's extremely handy - particularly the fast drying variety.

Two coats of a decent paint. I'd recommend heading to a trade supplier - they're cheaper, the paint will give you better coverage and they can digitally match the colour of any vendor. We got all the paint for our house from the Fleetwood trade centre in Inchicore but some of the colours were straight out of the Dulux and Colourtrend brochures.
