If you're self employed and get called for jury service who pays for your time?

Inform the registrar and request to be excused, if you are self employed and can't earn an income due to attending they will usually excuse.

Agreed I did this some time ago and they were very pleasant to deal with.

However I've a friend who was in the same boat, and due to a screwup with a case where a large amount of those on jury duty that week were from the same area as the accused, she was not excused, until the defence rejected her as they did not feel she would have her mind on the case due to worrying about her then new business

Thanks folks. I got a jury summons myself last week but Im okay as I have a doctors letter to back up my reasons to be excused so I assume I'll be alright in that regard.

However a neigbour got one also and she is also self employed but fit as a fiddle and she asked me to write a letter for her as she cant afford to take the time off from her little business so I was thinking of explaining the financial implications for her and hopefully she will be excused.

My mate got a notice for jury service years ago and sent back a letter to say he hated the guards and that they couldn't be trusted and that he believed from his dealings with them that they were all liars and he would find any accused not guilty if he was called ..... he hasn't been called since :)

There's no follow up if you don't show up. Half the people called are no shows.

She can but she thinks I have a better way of putting things in writing plus it will be a typed letter.

Courts service acknowledge that they don't follow up but plan to crack down. Should take a few decades.

Just a wee update. I got a reply back myself within 2 days to say I was excused so happy enough with that.

My neighbour (well, its actually a mate's wife) has her letter now sent in so should probably hear back from them early next week. I typed her letter and said that she's a sole trader, business is struggling (all true btw) and she cant afford the time off. Also she wouldnt be able to focus right with all the worry and stress of the business not turning a profit and has mortgage etc to pay. So hopefully that will do the trick.

I'll post back when she gets notified.

It will be something that I will do if I'm ever called I'm cut from the same cloth as my mate :) I'm all for being civic minded and all that but when it costs you money to get there and there's costs involved in being there Eh no thanks .

Then you're not civic minded. I've some issue with people 'dodging' jury service but look, needs must in some cases. However if one does dodge it one shouldn't be fooling themselves as to what kind of person they are in relation to civic duty.

I have my reasons for not wanting to do it and it's along the same line as my mate. Needless to say my time isn't free either . Anyone called for jury service should be compensated for all out of pocket expenses.

I can't see how it would not cost you some money in some way. When I did it I left the car at home and got the bus but it was not a huge sum maybe €20. My brother in law has always said he'd never do it (he's 59) and never has. Don't get that attitude... He's not actually going to prison, just being on a jury.

Perfectly reasonable position, but again it's the very opposite of being civically minded.
