Replacement central heating timer

I would like to replace our heating timer (the standard dial with the plastic tabs), with a modern one. I have a few jobs for an electrician elsewhere so would like to get this done at the same time.

A quick Google search has me confused. What's the difference in the number of channels in a particular unit?

Can anyone recommend a good unit?
