PayPal newbie - question as to how to proceed with UK buyer...

I have just had an offer, from a UK buyer, on DoneDeal for a camera.

I have accepted the offer via PayPal.

I received an email from PayPal with the following text:

"NOTE : The Buyer has provided a confirmed Address. Please ship the item bought by the buyer to the given name and address, this transaction is Covered by the PayPal Buyer Protection Policy.

Due to security measures, funds has been held until the shipment tracking number is confirmed. Funds has been debited from the buyer's account. However, Pending Payment may not be accessible in your account until we are able to verify the
    Shipment of this transaction.

Payment is presently appearing in your account as Pending, will be "
APPROVED" when the verification process is completed. Below is the process in order to complete the verification of the transaction.

IMPORTANT: The Tracking Number must be e-mailed once shipment is done, reply directly to this email by using the reply button in your Mail Box and Quote the Above Transaction ID for quick recognition of this transaction."

When I Login to PayPal, I can see that the amount I've accepted is indeed "Pending".

I'm just not clear as to what happens next.

Do I post the camera via registered post to the UK and then wait for PayPal to pay me?

Sorry for being thick. I'm new to this and just want to be sure.

    Many thanks.

    Is the camara anything special.
Was it a good price compared to rest of the market place
    If No proceed with caution
Buyer could contact paypal that he didn't receive item and request refund even thou you registered parcel.
I would ask the seller and you to set up a revolut acc and transfer the money he pays no fees you get a better exchange rate and no comeback from paypal if refund is requested .

It's a scam, paypal do not pend transactions in this way. If the goods are posted you will not receive any payment

If you log into your paypal account you will see your balance is 0

Once I hear the words PayPal and DoneDeal in the one sentence, my alarm bells go off ...

It's a scam OP, steer clear

It was a good price - what I asked for.

Total is just over €900, so not a small amount by any means.

I just received an email from the buyer confirming the transfer to my "Pending" PayPal account, and asking for the goods to be sent.

I have also received their full postal address from PayPal.

Am a bit nervous, to be honest.

To be fair to the buyer, if I were in their shoes, I wouldn't transfer €900+ to any account, PayPay or otherwise, prior to receiving the goods.

    Thanks.

It's a trust issue that is why there is feedback on eBay and adverts. I've used paypal and I have received cheques for items and waited for them to cash before sending items.

I would cancel the sale in paypal and request.another method of payment.

Have you spoken to the seller. Don't be rushed into a sale this is where poor.decisions are made.

The scammer usually always meet the asking without bargaining down or anything, or even offer more than you want...

I wouldn't go through with it if I was you and explain you would prefer to sell locally...

Is it a newly opened paypal account, or an account that is new to selling? Paypal introduced a new "security measure" for new sellers, meaning that for the 1st few transactions, paypal holds the money from the seller until they post the item tracked and upload the tracking number to Paypal. Once the tracking confirms the item has been received by the buyer. If you need the money ASAP, cancel the transaction and change to an alternate payment method.

    Thanks for the replies.

So, should I write to the buyer and say that I will now only accept payment in advance via, for example, bank transfer and give them my BIC etc.?

    Thanks again.

I've had the PayPal account for a while. But, I've only used it twice, and that was to make a purchase (magazine subscription) and pay for this DoneDeal ad. That's all.

    Thanks.

You can download an app revolut. Currency card debit card no cost in UK just stamp duty in Ireland. No fees once he has your telephone number can transfer money into your acc and you can send item. Palpal sides with the buyer and easily refund his money.
If he is serious then he can send you money with no restriction .

This is perfectly normal. New or infrequently used accounts have to suffer this. Happened to me on my first sale and again after reactivating my account after a period of inactivity. Especially higher value. It's nothing to worry about. Contact PayPal if you need reassurance.

I have over 500 cross border sales, most around that value.

    Thanks for the reply.

I guess my fear is being told the goods arrived damaged and where would that leave me? (They will be bubble-wrapped to within an inch of their existence!)

    Thanks.

Sounds like a scam to me too. For an item worth €900 I would only sell locally or revolut but I couldn't see a genuine buyer paying 900 in advance either.

This is not normal . DO NOT SEND THE ITEM.

The scammer is trying to get you to email him the tracking number. To get funds released from a pending balance on paypal you add the tracking number to the transaction on the site, you do not email the tracking number to the buyer. Log into your paypal account. There will be no transaction there. What you might see is a request for you to send money to this scammer. Do not send the item

Ps. Yes, my PayPal account is at €00.00, presumably because of the "Pending" status of the transaction?

    THIS IS A SCAM

Put some effort in and read the info in the link I provided in the last message

Do you honestly believe someone in the UK wants to pay full price for your second hand camera without examining it or asking questions first ??

Call paypal and ask them if you are still not sure. 1800 948510

The pending transaction you're seeing in your account is because you've given them your email address and they've send you a payment request . they haven't sent you any money

I hope you didn't click any links in the email. It's not from PayPal so if you did click a link they now have your password.

It's 100% a scam. One of the tell tail signs with these emails are the fake email addresses. It's not from a paypal.com address. That's warning number 1.

If there are any links in the email just hover your mouse over the link. You should see the actual link in the status bar at the bottom of your browser.

If you clicked on a link and entered any personal details, go directly to the site, in this case paypal.com and change your password.

With any email you receive asking you to click on a link, don't. Go directly to the relevant website and log in there. If the message was genuine you usually have a copy in your account too.

    Thanks for the replies.

I have changed my PayPal password and cancelled the transaction.

If I click on the PayPal masthead in the email, I get "Page not found".

    So, definitely a scam.

But, I can see how the likes of me would be fooled! :(

    Thanks again.

Fair play, glad you didn't go ahead with it...

Not trying to be smart but when has anyone spent 900 quid on a second hand item without as much as even looking at the item?

    Yes.

So, how does one get around the element of trust for transactions of this size, when the goods aren't new?

Ideally, I'd like to sell to someone local whom I can meet.

    Thanks again.

For me, adverts every day of the week. Nothing but scammers on Donedeal and Gumtree. Put a minimum price on it on adverts, so you can't see stupid low offers.

I have sold hundreds of items some valued at thousands cross borders using ebay, donedeal and adverts. I also purchase the same way. It is very common. I fail to see the issue when you have a right to return and can open disputes through third parties which make their money from doing exactly what you say is unsafe. Between adverts, donedeal and ebay I have over a thousand transactions, 90 od percent would have been postal and most cross border. I have sold to Germany, UK, USA, Lithuania, Russia, China and everywhere in between. High value collectors gold and silver coins, many specialist Chinese have been flying from the Headford post office globally for years and if there is one thing that better be perfect it is a coin. (Think anally retentive man with a jewellers loupe and a shky white gloved hand and you're half way there)

OP. I apologise if that was some kind of phishing email that I was not aware of, however. Do not let this put you off selling online. The world is your market and it is pretty safe.

Did you ever call paypal to confirm? As I recommended. Having your payment held is common protection for little used paypal accounts that may have been compromised to offer goods for sale and fleece buyers. It costs nothing to check and this should have been your first port of call.
