Clutch and flywheel north Dublin

Hi there, first time poster here

I have a 05 1.9tdi 105 Seat Toledo and I think I need to get the clutch and flywheel done within the next 2 weeks max. It's fine on the move but the juddering away from the line is very noticeable and it is a pain in stop start M50 traffic... and it is getting worse. Also if I am in nuetral and move the stick to the left to engage first, before I get there I csn feel the judder through the stick and whilst on the move if I lightly touch the clutch I can feel a vibration there too. Ticking time bomb? I've heard that you should go for a Sachs or Lux (?) kit. Can anyone recommend a garage near or in Santry? Ideally I could get my car collected and returned to me whilst I am in work, slowly paying for the parts and labour! Price is of course important but recommendations help too.

    Many thanks in advance, AJ

Are you sure it's the clutch? Those symptoms sound more like a loose or broken engine mount to me. I would get a trusted mechanic to check out the source of the judder before replacing a clutch that may be perfectly fine.

Thanks Pete. No basis for me thinking it was the clutch other than the age and mileage. I'll have to try and hunt out a trusted mechanic! If anyone can recommend one in the Santry area that would be most appreciated

Took it into a garage today. They said there is some play in the gearbox mount, (he rocked the engine to show me) and best to replace this and then see if it solves the problem... start with the cheapest thing before swapping the clutch and flywheel.

Driving today I noticed that it's not always as bad. Potentially either severity is linked to how warm the engine is. If thebproblem is only with a mount, the problem would be always the same, right? Thanks

If you do need to get the clutch and flywheel replaced, I'd look into buying your own parts and getting a mechanic to fit them. You could save yourself a good couple of quid.

I had to do the same myself 3 months ago, was quoted the bones of a grand in a garage, got it done the way I mentioned above for €375 parts + €200 Labour.

Alternatively, you could do a SMF conversion to save yourself another few Euro.

Thanks Alan. I heard that the SMF makes it even more unrefined which puts me off. The 375 was that for a Sachs or similar kit? Sounds like a very good price. Who did you get to fix yours? The mount has been replaced and the vibration is a million times better.

I actually didn't know it until changing it, but I had a SMF in mine all along. You would notice the difference between a SMF and DMF alright, but if I end up needing to replace it again in the next few years, I'd strongly consider putting the SMF back in. It's not that bad like, just depends on how much you want to spend.

Yeah it was a Sachs kit. I got it from AutoPartsNI (I think that's their name anyway) on eBay.
