Swapping seriously scuffed 18 alloys for 15 or 16 steel rims

I recently bought a second hand Ford Focus recently with 18 inch alloys, the previous owner must have been kerbing the sh-t out of it because they're in bits and make both the car and myself look a bit silly. I was tempted to have them repaired but really I'd prefer to have normal wheels that can handle potholes etc... (I got a double puncture this weekend hitting some some torn up tarmac). I was thinking breakers yard but I'd have to spend more money and still be stuck with the alloys and would need new tyres.. would an alloys shop have old customer wheels that maybe they're do a straight swap with? They're probably good wheels but I'd be happy swapping them out for lesser more practical wheels at no cost to myself preferably. Any thoughts?

To be honest, anyone looking for 18" alloys would be doing that purely for looks (definitely not for driveability or comfort) so if they are seriously suffed, there's probably not much value in them.

They're actually not, they're cheap MAK wheels and worth very little. No one would swap a set of original Focus wheels for them. They're most likely the wrong offset for the car too as they're just a generic wheel that's drilled in a Ford fitment. Bite the bullet and buy new wheels or from a breakers and sell those things for whatever you can get for them...maybe €100 if your lucky.

Just get a set of used 16 inch ford alloys for it. They won't be expensive.

Reckon that's the plan, just need tires too... or pardon my ignorance in such matters but i'm presuming 18 inch tires are not compatible with 16's, this is the case right?

That's right. The 16/17/18 is the size of the outside of the wheel, and the inside if the tyre.
205/55/16 tyres are relatively cheap, and you'll usually get tyres on the wheels you buy second hand.
