Fridge freezer is tripping the fuse

    Folks,
    My aunt has a free-standing fridge freezer which is constantly tripping the fuse. I know it's the fridge cos everything else on the same fuse was removed one by one to check. A neighbour of hers went in yesterday and disconnected the green earth wire from her socket (not from the plug), then changed the plug entirely, plugged it back in and the fridge continues to work without problem, now no longer tripping the fuse.
    Quite apart from disconnecting the earth wire probably not being a good idea, any thoughts please on what might be wrong?
    The fridge is 15+ years old.

    I'd imagine there was current flowing through the earth from the fridge that was tripping the switch, I'd recommend replacing the fridge.

    Disconnecting the earth is very dangerous, something that could be lethal if the earth leakage is large enough to allow more than 30mA to flow
    Get it checked out by an electrician or replace it, but DO NOT USE IT!
