Hi, I've worked in retail for quite a long time, now at a fairly high level in the pecking order. However, I can't see myself progressing any further, and tbh I'm thoroughly fed up of being on the shop floor for most of my days. To add to this, I'm due to come back soon from maternity leave with my second child. Having both children in childminding will leave me with a grand total of €15 each month after fees. My husband has to cover every expense and bill, and it's really tight even now. I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of not having any money to contribute, even though I'll be working minimum 42hrs/week. I also hate the idea of being away from my children for so long each day (before having the youngest, I was gone from 7-7 each day)
I approached work about various flexible working patterns, which they are unable to accommodate due to my position and "business needs" If I was a basic sales assistant I'd probably get more flexibility! However, I've worked too damn hard to get to where I am, such as it is.
Basically, I'm completely disillusioned with the whole thing. I don't know what other careers I could follow. I trained as a teacher but didn't really ever teach, hated it. I do a lot of work with HR and training, but never get much recognition for it, so it doesn't transfer very well. Ideally I'd be able to work evenings/weekends, to work around my husband's hours so we could share childcare. I don't have any family/friends help with childcare, nobody who can take them for a few hours a week. I'm seriously considering just jacking it all in for a few years, but I do want to work in some way!
Does anybody have a similar experience? Is there anything that I should consider or look into? Anyone made the move from retail to a more family friendly environment? My head is just all muddled at this stage so I need an outsider's perspective!
Apologies if this is really muddled or in the wrong place!
