    Requirements.

    1. Must be no older than 10 years old.
    2. Must be comfortable to take family of 4 for everyday, and occasionally 5 adult's comfortable with big boot space (prefer saloon or estate to hatchback)
    3. Must be petrol or hybrid - no diesels.
    4. Must be as fuel efficient as possible (ideally less than 7 l/100km - more then 40mpg combined)
    5. Must be reasonably quick (no more than 10 seconds 0-100km/h, ideally below 9s).
    6. Must be available in reasoably high spec option with ESP, leather steering wheel, cruise control, and possibly leather seats, parking sensors, etc if possible.
    7. Must be within budget of 6k to 7k with 8k being absolute maximum.

    What doesn't matter:
    1. Engine size - can by any. Motortax rate - doesn't matter.
    2. Brand - any, but prefer Japaneese than German.
    3. Gearbox - both manual and automatic acceptable.
    4. Can buy from dealer with warranty, or privately without warranty, or go to UK to pick up one - makes no difference.

    Any recommendations highly appreciated.

    Honda Accord?

I'd say you will struggle to find any conventional saloon/estate that will take 3 adults in the rear comfortably. How occasional is that 3rd adult being to be in the back and how far would you be travelling with them as they will be the dealbreaker for most large size family saloons or estates.

Ford Mondeo 2.0 litre petrol Titanium. It would fulfil all of your criteria bar fuel economy which is 35 mpg avg.

    Lexus gs450h
Fits the bill apart from fuel consumption unless you drive like a granny.

Both perfect, but as you say, fuel economy is bit below my requirements.

So far I can only think of 3rd gen. Avensis 1.8 which would fulfil all requirements, but there surely must be something else as well.

A c180 may fit the bill but you are looking at the high end of your price range.

It won't be too often to fit 5 adults, but once I do it might be 3000km journey :D

I should imagine a 2.5T Volso S80 would fit the bill nicely.

    A quick example -

(yes its a V70 but plenty of both around)

Would you stretch the budget a few grand for a leaf?

Is it for a disabled driver/pasenger?

Have you a particular Ford in mind that fits the bill?

I think you may have 1 or 2 conflicting criteria, but I may be wrong.

Sub 9 second 0-60 petrol means 2.0 or over. On a 2.0 you won't get 40mpg combined. Maybe on a motorway run, but only just if you stick to 120kmph all the way. But probably not with 5 adults on board. Which will not be comfortable for middle rear passenger in pretty much every car I know.

Going by real world figures by the way, not claimed manufacturers figures which are fiction.

But fair play for sticking to your criteria and looking for car that ticks all the boxes for you.

Can't help i'm afraid, don't know of such a car, although plenty come close.

My car for example, would pass most but fall down on the mpg and 5 adults comfortably. 4 adults very comfortably, 5 bit of a squeeze and 30 mpg combined (on a good day).

Not sure such a car exists tbh. You're asking for a lot. I mean you want REALLY big, reasonably quick, comfortable, mods & cons. tick, tick, tick, tick. < 7 l/100km er, no.

Might pick up a 10 year 5 series for that budget.

Probably need to look in the UK but any VW group such as the Passat, A6 or Octavia Estate with the 2.0 TSI engine would fit your requirements.
Plenty of room in those estates and with the 2.0tsi petrol you should be sub 7 seconds 0-60. Driven carefully on motorway runs should be close to mpg requirements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,523 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Mpg requirements are for a combined figure though. What sort of figures would a 2.0 TSI give for a mixture of motorway and urban/extra urban I wonder?

Cinio would a Civic 1.8 FD Saloon be a good compromise?

    No, no...
It's for my everyday car, which is meant to replace Civic.

    No disabled passengers/drivers.

Leaf unsuitable due to limited range.

Yea, I probably ask for too much together.

However as I said before simple Avensis 1.8 valvematic 3rd gen. seems to fulfill all requirements. While it's not below 9s 0-100km/h but it's below 10s as must be, and it would be better than 40mpg combined (less than 7.5l/100km). 5 passengers probably not comfortably, but reasonably, and 4 really comfortably.
Of all the options so far, this car is the closest, however I would love to find something else filling up all requirements and being a bit more exciting.

I was thinking about it, but tbh avensis 1.8 is bigger, more comfortable, and providing similar performance, and probably better fuel economy.

    The T27 model (3rd gen).
It's available from 2009, with facelift in 2012 and 2015 afair.

But for my budget I can get 2009 to 2010 max I suppose.

    Lexus is250
You'd get mid 30's mpg with a manual one.
