I bought an item on ebay this morning. The postage cost was £2.80 for the UK. The seller messages straight after and asks if I'm from ireland. I replied "Northern Ireland" which is still part of the UK. He messages again saying the postage is now £17 or I can arrange my own postage!! Paypal say the payment has gone through so I opened a dispute with him over this.

What will happen? I don't hold much hope as I've used paypal before in this instance and they were beyond useless (claimed a seller used stolen money to pay for my goods so they took back the money and he got to keep the item!!).

Paypal always side with the buyer, you'll be fine.

Seller should have offered to cancel or increase P&P.

Could you update the thread with your dispute result please? I have had several problems over the past few months with seller postage rates.

    TT

    +1, like addresspal.

Couriers will often charge different rates for mainland UK and NI, but his initial £2.80 sounds like it was standard royal mail.

The seller could also be genuinely ignorant and not know royal mail will charge the same to NI. Many would presume it will cost the same to ship an item from 1 island to another, so he could have just looked up costs to Ireland.

He posted for 2.80 and apologised...Probably because paypal withheld his money!!

That's good to hear. I have found several ebay sellers using postage costs to make money on items I have won in auctions. It is one of the processes I check carefully now.

I bought a large piece of art, not expensive, and was quoted £35 for delivery to a UK address. The sellers would not enter into any communications about it so I got a quote for £7.50 delivery and passed the details to the seller.

They got the hump and threatened to remove the item. After a number of messages they relented but were aghast at the neutral feedback I put on afterwards. Odd thing was they described me as a "great Ebuyer".
