Case 1394 ignition replacement

Myself and my 36 year old case 1394 were about to part company however I decided to give her one last chance so I put her into the garage with a list of 20+ things to fix, all minor leaks, broken welds, stufysbnot working etc. etc.
Anyway she has come back reborn and a changed head gasket has given her plenty more poke.
The one thing which was fixed initially but no longer works is the ignition switch, the neutral wasn't switching so they took it out, freed it up and sprayed contact spray into it but it has now stopped working again.
How do I change it for a new one?

Is this the switch in the gearbox that won't let you start in gear . Ours been dodgy for well over 10 years now. Just shake the gear stick and it makes contact.

I had the pleasure of driving one 32 years ago, but can't remember is it a Lucas or Bosch ignition? Is it the key causing problems?

If you can get in behind the dash take lots of photos of where all the wires go before you take it apart. I reckon there is a big plastic(?) nut behind the dash, if you open the nut wiring and all should come out towards you so it's easier to work on.

Any chance of a pic? Or try some of the david brown forums for help too.

Have a 29yr old loyal 1394 here also! Got the ignition key switch changed afew months back, I've a local mechanic who got a spurious one that did the trick no problem. What part of the country you in, there are several good DB/case lads dotted around the country.

Any better description of this problem.
I can't quite make out what the "neutral" is, it's not a term that would relate to a component.

Are you referring to the ignition switch or the protection switch on the gearbox that prevents the tractor being started in gear ?

Same problem here with our Davy. Ours is the ignition switch. When you turn the key you hear a click but the engine doesn't turn. You could give 2 minutes sitting in it turning the key

The main switch is easily got at any motor factors and even easier to replace. Just don't tear all the wires off in one go, one at a time is best!!

The gearbox switch on my 1490 gave up a generation ago and I just bypassed it with a short piece of wire on the two terminals.

No, it's the ignition switch where the key goes in. The gear box one has never given grief, touch wood!

The ignition switch, it is turning on the dash lights fine but doesn't turn the engine at all. I'm having to short terminals on the starter as a short term fix.

I'm presuming since they did a short term fix that worked for a while that its indeed the ignition switch..

Any motor factors will have one..
Check the switch, I've seen them with both spade lugs or terminal screw fittings, make sure you get whatever wire terminators you need while in the store..

There is a diagram in the box, doesn't take long to swap over the wires one by one, if your not replacing the terminations on the wires just make sure its in good condition and not many wire strands broken..

On the switch I got for my Brown there was no switch position for the heater plug, I just wired this in with the signal for the starter, that way I can put it in gear which allows me turn the key to the start position to heat, then put it in neutral and turning the key to the start position starts the tractor..

    Excellent, cheers for that.
