Hi ya. We farm at home but are not vat registered. I'm looking at buying a second hand pajero and am looking to tax it commercially. Can I tax it commercially if I get my name put on the herd number. Theres a joint herd owner form that can be filled out.

Should be no problem but might be best ask your local tax office as they seem to vary vastly in their implementation of the regulations.

Are you planning on going farming properly sometime?

Does putting your name on the herd number mean that's the date you started farming - in terms of national reserve or young farmer schemes?

Just something to keep in mind?

    Thanks for your replys.

Don't think I am eligible for the young farmers schemes as probably not doing enough hours on the farm to justify it.

It has nothing to do with hours on the farm. It might be more viable to list you as an employee. If the Jeep is mainly for the farm it may be possible to register it in your father or mother's name and I sure it in there name with you as a named driver or get open driving on it. It may not be enough to list you on herd numbers, some Co Council's want a sole trader tax clearance certificate from revenue

Thanks for your reply. To ask a silly question how did you get a certificate of commercial insurance. Have you got your own company or anything

Through fbd, you probably already have it unbeknown to yourself if you are with them

I just put the auld bucks herd number on for my landcruiser first time tax this year. Was no problem with that.

Unless you really need a big jeep in a lot of cases the commercial tax is a do. Most jeep type private cars have a lower tax than 333 and having to do a doe every year is a curse which with a middle aged car is every second year plus the nct is less than half the cost. I have a 1 yo van with low mileage and off I have to go and doe it for 111 euro
