    Hi all.
I heard an unusual sound in the grove beside my house (country side).
It was late morning last week.
The sound can only be described as such..
If you put your finger in your mouth against your inside cheek and pull it out..
POP.. This sound I heard twice.. POP POP..
    Any ideas?!

Coot? Is there a pond or wetland nearby?

    Thanks for the reply.
There's no pond or water but the land around is quite wet.
The grove has palm and spruce in it.
I googled the coot sound and the samples I heard online are quite high pitched compared to this.
This sound was actually more like a sound effect than a bird song.
Literally if you put your finger inside your cheek like we did as kids and pull it out, you get same sound. Twice.
I was so fascinated by the unusual sound that I couldn't tell you any subsequent sound that might have been from same bird.
It just struck me because of reminder from childhood of the 'pop'.

I have heard grey squirrels making unusual sounds...maybe it is not a bird. What part of country? What kind of habitats nearby? Might help narrow it down.

It's east Limerick. Deep in country side.. No lakes or river less than 2km away. Lots of forestry plantation in area. This grove has palm and spruce and holly and is only about 20sq m.
The noise was coming from tree height not ground level.
Two consecutive very loud distinctive pop sounds. Like a massive drop from a leaking tap.

Raven would be my automatic answer, can make a very distinctive 'pop' . Grey Crow another possibility, they have quite a wide range of vocalisations including the 'pop' sound..

To be honest, if it's a deep popping sound then it could be any of the corvids.

No, I'm talking about a single sound made at irregular intervals, for instance, now and again one of 'our' Ravens will appear at the top of a huge MacraCarpa tree beside the yard, to be walking past unaware of its presence and hear a loud 'pop' can get your attention :), and the sound is uncannily as the poster describes it...

A woodpecker, perhaps? Although, that sounds more like a 'knock knock' than a 'pop pop'.

I'm really sorry but I can't open that audio. Going by the descriptions in last two posts I think we're onto something.
Remember the officer in the Police Academy films who could mimic sounds? This sounded like something straight from him. Like nothing from wildlife, more like a noise from someone beatboxing if that makes sense...

If you were in Scotland I'd have thought of the male capercaillie, but Limerick...
