I'd be going with MCPA myself.

If they aren't very strong, the grass will grow up between the stalks with MCPA.

With Roundup, any grass growing between the stalks will be killed as well and that could allow weeds to germinate and get a competition free start over the grass.

i would agree....if knapsack spraying Lupo might be your best bet

    I disagree
MCPA is a hormone type herbicide
Hit them with Roundup and kill the root

Does MCPA not kill the root?

    Nope
Tis a hormone of the Auxin family
Causes abnormal growth that kills above ground parts
    Works good all the same

Safe for grass, clover etc, only takes out the weeds
But they'll be back and you'll have to do it all again and
    again and again and . . .

A weed licker is what you need for a longer term solution

I spot sprayed rushes with MCPA a while ago, and they seem to have died? As in, went brown, rotted away and now no sign of em...

Am I lucky or just I haven't waited long enough for them to come back yet? :)

You can get lucky with timing if you exhaust the reserves
with the uncontrolled top growth but MCPA doesn't kill by
    killing the root.

Use roundup in a weedlicker to target the root
Or the sponge type napsack adapter for spot spraying

Weedlicker used round-up here how long does it take till start till Brown them
And how long till there fully killed? Think the contractor kept the rollers a bit high here myself he said he didn wanna
Kill any grass even tho it was well grazed out.

I got rid of rushes with two applications of MCPA, roots an all, two years done now and still not back.
I mowed them six weeks before each spraying and sprayed them in good weather

We've done a fair bit of licking with roundup, hope to spray some to compare, that's if the weather permits.

    good to hear

did you do anything else like drainage, raise the ph or p&k in those affected fields

i think all of these have to be done where financially viable for a long term job

sick of treating them down thru the years and it's only going around in circles

Only difference was that the sheep used to graze it better after killing the rushes

Have major doubts about Roundup ???? Use it around the yard for grass weeds etc. Will kill it all right but they are back again the following year. Will the rush killed not return again too ???????????????

Weedlicker runs of the spot spraying tank so it will run off the quad sprayer, 100kitres.

I think the recommended mix rate is 5%, but we've used it down to 1% and it kills, just slower.

We've a carpet type licker, actually it's in at the back of the shed at the moment behind a few trailers, but I find it important to hose down the drum and carpet with a hose before going to the field, otherwise it takes too long to wet it with mix and you end up with it running off killing patches on the ground.

Have a large field sprayed with MCPA last year by a contractor with a tractor. Hoping to minimize waste and spot spray this year, and torn between roundup and MCPA. Seems MCPA is a better bet as I don't want to lose the good grass around and inbetween the rushes, but was advised that MCPA isn't certified for spot sprayer. Any reason I couldn't still get away with this if I had the right protective gear?

How does it make sense that mcpa only kills whats above the ground.
It doesnt if the roots were still alive the plant would still be alive.
They grow back if the soil is too acidic or wet simple as

D50 is approved for use with a knapsack and will kill rushes as well as mcpa. Might be a bit more expensive though. https://www.agridirect.ie/product/d50
