2015 Mazda 6 - navigation system

Just bought a 2015 Mazda 6 with no sat nav. However there is a 'NAV' button next to the touch screen. I've read online that some versions come with and some without sat nav bit that they all have the option; but you need an SD card to activate it.

There are pictures and videos online showing the SD card going into a slot on the dash near the drivers door (under the i-stop control and close to where your right knee would be when sitting in the drivers seat). But on my car this is actually a small little pull-out compartment for storing small things such as change or a key (it's tiny!).

Just wondering if there's an option to install the nav system and if so is the SD card slot in behind this compartment or would that need to bed taken out completely & replaced?

I'd say you would need more than just a SD slot. I'd doubt your car has a GPS receiver fitted either. I know dealers were doing an "offer" on Sat Nav on the 6 about 2 years ago for €500 extra so maybe it is just a case of coding to enable it. Might be worth asking a dealer what your options are.

It is a 'soft' upgrade... just requires the SD card. The SD card slot is in the arm rest storage compartment beside the USB ports etc.. There are two slots.. one is for nav and one is for media.

You can pick up SD cards on ebay for about 150e... I am not sure how genuine they are, usually shipped from eastern europe. Mazda charge about 500e for the card. I bought a pre reg 6 last year without nav but got the garage to throw in the card 'free'.

Edit: The card is 'locked' somehow after 50 miles of usage.. so do not buy a second hand one online

Thanks I'll check it out. Not really essential anyway but it'd be nice to have for the handful of trips each year where I'm going somewhere new that I haven't been before. How did we ever survive before technology eh?!

Hmm, having had a quick look on carzone... 2015 looks like it may have been the old interior. In which case... what I posted above probably does not apply.

Yeah the one I have has the screen built into the dash. I think the newer ones have the screen coming up out of the top of the dash. Not sure if there's a different nav system in the new ones.

Like I said mine has the nav button but when I press it absolutely nothing happens. The guy I bought it from said it doesn't come with nav.... but since the button is there I was wondering if it's set up for it and I'd just have to get a card to activate it?

I know it's a €650 dealer fit option on all Mazda6 models when new - same price as factory option, but I think they are all activated at the dealership.

Pre-Facelift Mazda's have the SD slot near the iLoop button on the right hand side of the steering wheel. From memory it's a tiny little, more or less hidden flap that needs to be exposed to put the SD in.

No idea whether you can just put an SD card in and it will work, or whether the system needs "unlocking" for Nav. Had 2 2013 6's here at this time yesterday but they both went yesterday so can't go down to check the exact location of the SD.

Yeah I've seen that on some youtube videos etc, but mine doesn't have that slot near the iLoop button.... instead there is a little tiny storage compartment!

The likes of 650 notes (or even less) would give you top spec satnav (or at least two average ones) with lifetime updates. And you'll keep it when you decide to change a car.

They would also look terrible sitting on top of your dash or stuck to the windscreen with cables showing. Might as well use your smartphone with google maps at that rate in my view.

Agree here.. always confuses me when I see a brand new car that somebody has ordered with a satnav stuck to the windscreen...

That's where the SD card should go, at least it did on mine. I didn't have that coin slot, just the slot for the card.

It's very possible that the SD slot was only installed on higher spec models or from a certain build date.

There isn't a small flip down bit in the circled area is there?

I seem to remember it was very difficult to find.

    I didn't notice anything.

I have a CX5, same interior. That cubby hole gets replaced with the SD card component. If you pull out the cubby hole you'll see a loose connection, that goes into the SD card reader. You also need the SD card. My dealer also told me at the time that the radio has to be pulled out and a GPS receiver fitted. I'm not sure if that's just a connection or a part is needed.
