RTA and legal position

Was recently involved in an RTA. I was driving through a junction, on a green light, when a car went through the red light from my left, and such my car. The driver is claiming that he is not liable, and I should have yielded to him ( he hasn't started moving until I was more than half way across the junction) as the was an ambulance, with lights on, behind him. The Gardai were called, and told me I was at fault, even though I pointed out that drivers can not break red lights to make way for ESV unless an instruction is given by a Garda.

Just wondering if there is something in law, either way, that would settle the argument? Only thing I can find is an RSA publication on the Garda website that has 1 line in it saying not to break a red light.
