Hi. Just got an old marconiphone radio and want to plug it in to see if it works. Trouble is there is no plug and the two wires are just a brown colour. How do I know which is live to fit plug.thanks.

It probably doesn't matter, appliance of that vintage had a two pin plug which could be plugged in with either pin getting the live connection. So just wire the plug with those brown wires going to live and neutral. You'll also need an external antenna, use one of the wires from an old power cord from a lamp.

Just make sure the radio was manufactured for the European market i.e. it's a not a US 110V model.

Cheers. You were right. Seen it somewhere else so chanced it and lights came on but no sound. Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't trust the wiring and components in old radios, there have been times in the past I plugged them in and sometimes resulted in a puff of smoke and/or a mini fire.

Love the sound that those old valve radios give. Hope you get it back working again. (And given me a good idea for a project)
