A Polish friend looks after his mother, in a financial sense, (fees for doctor / nurse / home visits) - is he entitled to any relief on this via the Dependent relative tax credit?

He obviously lives here and is a PAYE worker.

I think it depends on her level of income, and if anyone else maintains her also. For example, if another brother or sister is paying half, he would be due half the credit

He can claim back 20% of most medical expenses that he has paid through Revenue on a Med 1 tax form. Don't need to be claiming the dependant relative tax credit to get this.

We've done that for his own medical expenses, but just wondering if he could also claim the dependent relative tax credit for his mother, as she totally depends on him for her own medical and social care - even though they are not in the same country. He pays all her medical costs and her food and bills etc.

Who can I claim tax relief for?
You may claim tax relief in respect of any qualifying health expenses paid by you in respect of any individual.

Can I claim relief on the cost of medical treatment obtained outside the State?
Yes, you may claim for expenses incurred abroad. The following expenses qualify for tax relief:

You can claim tax refund on medical expenses you pay for another person. The dependant relative credit is only €70 so while it's better than nothing it's a pittance in the overall scheme of things when it comes to the expenses your friend is probably incurring.
