Wait time for new car

I bought a car 14 weeks ago and was told it would be with me in 12 weeks. Rang the dealer and he said it was built over a month ago and should be here any day now but still no sign or word from the dealer. On top of that, he said when they get it in it will take roughly a week before i can pick up.
How normal is it to get no info on where the car is? Surely they have quite specific tracking on cars considering a high value item?

Even tho it was 14 weeks did you allow for holidays within the last 14 weeks? My boss got a new car ordered in November and told 12 weeks. When we worked it out with the holidays covered he was due to collect the car 2 weeks ago on the monday. He got the car 2 days after that, when asked in the garage they also told him due to the holidays etc it was delayed.

ok so with holidays it still should have been here this week which it isn't. What annoys me is not knowing anything other than, "it should be here any day now" not much good to me considering ill have a week wait after it arrives.

    What brand is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Uncle_moe

    its a skoda.
Good point about the stormy weather, hadn't factored that in. Just hoping I get some clarification soon. Wasn't expecting it to take so long to be honest but I have never bought a new car before so will know in future.

I think there is a way of tracking VAG cars from leaving the factory, on the ship to ETA at the port. I'm sure some regulars will be on here soon with the way of doing it.

just off the phone with the dealer, they wouldn't let me speak to the salesman though, too busy. No clue what's happening. In two mins about going ahead if they continue this level of service.

Ask the salesman for the comm number and then ring VW Ireland with that number and they can track it and let you know its whereabouts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Uncle_moe

thanks for the reply. Can't get any response from the salesman for the past 3 days so getting the number could be tricky.

He has no answer for you so probably avoiding your calls. Pay a visit in person, less chance of being fobbed off.

Fair point, will have to call to them at the weekend so.

No delays on Octavia at the moment. Is it one of the first face lift, or one of the last of the pre facelift?

Possible that a specific option is causing a delay but I doubt that.

He said it's Skoda so could be another model that has a delay? I've had experience for four Skoda orders being delayed over the original estimated time so it doesn't sound unusual to me

It's an octavia before the new face lift. Nothing unusual about the order, style model with different alloys and a couple of other small things.
According to the dealer it was built by the start of Feb and waiting to be shipped. No update since and ignoring calls an emails.

There was a boat in last week and everything has at least hit the compound and most stuff has hit the dealers by now.

Something very fishy going on. If you want to pm me the colour and options on the car and who it was ordered through, I'll see if my Skoda dealer can shed some light when I talk to him today - unless he's the one ignoring you.....

I'm having the same problem with an Opel. I ordered the first week of January and was told mid to end of March. Been on to them regularly and yesterday they said it's now looking like mid to end May!! I don't know what to do. At this stage I'll be paying full price for what's kind of a six month old car i.e 171 reg when it'll be almost 172 time.
To add to the annoyance my own car is now overdue its NCT which I didn't arrange as I thought it'd be long gone before it expired. Don't feel right driving it without NCT so I'm basically car less.
Has anyone gotten a discount or anything due to major delays like this? If I back out now will I get my deposit back due to them not completing the sale as agreed or do I just suck up the loss?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Uncle_moe

I got nothing from my dealer, not even an apology. Not his fault it was delayed but he also wasn't in any way helpful in the situation. Not sure where you stand on deposit etc. My guess is you would forfeit anything you've handed over already unfortunately. Have you tried getting in touch with the manufacturer?
In my case skoda located the car instantly and were able to give me a good estimate on when it would arrive.

Well the dealer was on to Opel and they say it's currently in Antwerp due on a boat to Cork on 8th May and in Dublin a week after that but a month ago it was due on a boat around 8th April so God only knows if the dates mean anything this time.
It's my first brand new car and like an eejit I thought I could walk into the showroom in January and practically drive out with a new car that day. The innocence of it.
Presume yours has arrived at this stage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Uncle_moe

Yeah mine arrived about a week after the dealer said it would which was about 3 weeks later than the initial date he told me. Worst part was that he would rarely answer the phone and refuse to call me back. I can only speculate that mine was damaged in transit and they didn't want to tell me or something. You could try opel directly yourself, that way you will know for sure where the car is and when it will arrive.

Same boat here, ordered end of February being told it would be end of March then two days later told end of May!
My guess on the deposit (and what i may consider doing myself if end of May comes and goes), is that you paid the deposit under the agreement you would get the car around a particular time, they failed to deliver on that (although possibly through no fault of their own) and changed the dates so i feel the deposit should be refundable.
I just found it odd that i was told end of March and within two days that changed by 2 months - makes me think they knew well at the time but didn't want to lose the sale.

Yes, you're probably right....they'll say anything to get the sale. In fact I initally went in to buy a different car altogether and he told me they were going out of production so he talked me into the Opel. Since then there is no indication that they've stopped production at all so what else is not true? If it wasn't for the fact he offered the best trade in price on my own car I would've walked by now (pardon the pun :-) )
Also if I'd known I'd be driving my own car for this long I would've NCTd it instead of letting it expire in March. Basically I didn't because I was afraid if it failed they wouldn't honour the trade in figure and expected they would own it before the expiry date anyway. It's all a right pain.
Moe.......As regards damage in transit....could well be, they'd never admit it anyway. Mine's so late though it probably would've had to have fallen overboard :-)

What car did they say was going out of production? Just curious

And what type of Opel is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭Iospir

Colm ----the Kia Picanto. Said there would be a different version of it eventually but current model couldn't be had.

ROR Opel Karl. Taking a bit of a chance on this as it's new so not much info on performance etc. Fingers Xd.

According to Wikipedia, the Karl is built in South Korea. Possible that the saleman wasn't aware of this and quoted normal (European) build times of 8-10 weeks.

Never ordered a Karl, but I know the Mokka (also built in South Korea) had 16-20 week lead times - lot of that is just down to shipping times.

Good chance they ship the Karl & Mokka's from Korea to Europe then UK & Ireland versions get loaded on to a ship there, along with the European built Opel's.

Did anyone actually buy the Karl? You don't see them around, at least not down this neck of the woods.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭Iospir

Bazz....It would appear only me :-) I've been looking out for them and I haven't seen one yet. Hope that's not an ominous sign.

ROR....that's probably it alright. Not holding my breath at this stage. Next time I decide to get a new car I'll be ordering in July for Jan.

They sold a 107 Karls in 2016, 73 this year so far. Must be all hiding in the same part of the country.
