New car - switching insurance

I'm due to get a new car today. A dealer from Kerry is bringing up the new one to Galway and taking my old trade-in away.

It's been a loooooong time since I went through this, so forgive my ignorance - but what do I do about swapping insurance? Do I call my insurer and state the new car details and the time I want to swap?

What about a tax disc for display? Do I need to wait for them to send me a new one, and in the meantime I'm driving around without one? My old disc has my policy number on, but also the old car's reg number, so I presume I can't take that to display in the new car....?

Yes, just call the insurance co., give them the details of the new car and the time at which you want the transfer to take effect. Prepare also to bend over and cough up extra premium / a fee for changing.

If it's a used car, then it'll already have a tax disc - assuming its taxed.
Your current insurance disc is for your current car only - so bin it / stick it in the glovebox and wait for them to post you a new one. In the unlikely event you're asked where the disc is, explain you've just changed cars or you could ask the insurance co. to send you an email to that effect and leave it on the dash.

    Thanks Joe,
So I shouldn't leave my old tax disc in the old car - I should bin it?
Or doesn't it really matter - I presume it's no use to the dealer anyway?

Are you confusing tax disc and insurance disc?

The tax disc belongs to the car... leave that in your current car. Your new car will have it's own disc (or none at all if its brand new or not taxed!)

The insurance disc is yours and you should remove that and bin it.

Do not bin the ins. disc, you will be required to return it to the insurer.

I called my insurer and switched over to the new car (and paid the 50% extra added to my old premium ). They said they would be sending out new documentation, but didn't mention returning my old disc.

Anyway, I've got the new car now and noticed it has no tax disc - even though I did a vehicle check on it which stated it's taxed up to the end of March!

I've contacted the dealer and they're trying to find the disc...

I don't think I've ever returned the old disc... binned it each time.

End of March is only a few weeks but better to have it I guess. I'd put a note on the windscreen if parking it anywhere public.

Lads i hope you wont mind me writing here with my query...i just got a new car this week, my old car is insured until august and NCT is due in may. Its the first time i am changing to different car, so my questions are:
    1. do i have to go with the same insurer or can i get quote from someone else as well?
    2. i have no penalty points and 10+ NCB am i loosing it if i go to different insurance company?
    3. if i renew my existing insurance for new car so the old one becomes uninsured can a buyer drive it without having an insurance disc?
    4. i wouldnt bother with NCT but if i wont sell before it expires do i have to do it? my old car is "old" 2000 make
    thanks you for all suggestions

    1. do i have to go with the same insurer or can i get quote from someone else as well? Contact current provider, they might charge small fee to change current policy over to new car. That is what most people would do. This would leave your current car uninsured but cheapest way to get new car onto the road

    2. i have no penalty points and 10+ NCB am i loosing it if i go to different insurance company? If going to new company they will ask for letter to prove NCB

    3. if i renew my existing insurance for new car so the old one becomes uninsured can a buyer drive it without having an insurance disc? No he cannot drive it

    4. i wouldnt bother with NCT but if i wont sell before it expires do i have to do it? my old car is "old" 2000 make No you dont have to do it, but you wont sell it without NCT

Maybe ask insurance company and see what they can do.

    They will know best.

Having 2 cars insured at sametime seems a bit mad

It is up to the person who buys your car to make sure that they have it insured before it leaves your property.

Sorry I am not clear what you mean

Are you talking about test drive? or are you talking about them buying the car and driving away?

If test drive then ask insurance

If you are talking about person buying and driving away, not your problem. Person who bought the car should make sure they have insurance before they drive off

Hi, i was thinking about driving away part, all clear now. there could be a little complication for me if i transfer insurance over to new car and wont sell old one before nct expires i might have problem to bring it to nct centre for test...but now i will hope it will go before may.

I think, and I say I think, you can test up to 3 months before the NCt is due, I would get in a request now, NCT it up and it will be easier to sell as well
