BL & Solicitor

    Hi All,

I just have a general query. I have seen a friend converting from BL to solicitor (had practiced at the bar for the required period etc.). I was just wondering if some has completed the BL but not yet devilled and decided to complete Fe1s/training contract/PC etc. -can they? They are not converting the way my friend is and therefore they would not apply to be disbarred. Have not come across this and I was curious. I assume it is a.o.k but it is always good to get information from someone more informed.

Just on a side note: if someone is an academic BL having never devilled can they still use BL after their name? Just looking at people in work. :)
If they were doing the Fe1 route (after completing the BL without devilling) they could surely not hold themselves out to be both BL and solicitor?

    Thanks for your input!

P.S. apologies if I have not slotted this into the correct forum. I tried my best and if a Mod can move it to a more appropriate forum I would appreciate it. ;)

You cannot be both a BL and solicitor.

I dont believe you are entitled to use BL unlsess you are practicing but people do it anyway.

The only people who aren't supposed to use BL are solicitors. Anyone else can use it although it is pretentious to use it outside of practice or formal settings.
