Ok this is a bit of a retro question :D
A friend has a galaxy S with Froyo that he wants to update to ICS.
When I try to update OTA it asks for a SIM for some reason (there's none in it currently)

Kies doesn't recognise it as being connected. USB debugging is on. I vaguely remember using Odin to do this ages back but can seem to find a clear guide or an official ROM.

Anyone got a good memory or an active bookmark?

That only went as far as Ginger Bread. You needed a Custom Rom to get it to Ice Cream Sandwich.

But these days it's gonna be hard to find it now. Might still have something somewhere within XDA forums? But you'll be hoping there are still active mirrors.

I'm not getting anywhere. Nearly all the links are dead at this stage. I managed to download a MIUI ROM which is a Zip, so I don't know how to use it with Odin or load it directly from the SD card.

You need a custom recovery to flash it from there. You place it on the SD, boot to the recovery (by holding a combination of buttons) and use vol up/down to select a file to flash.

Really I'd bin it. They were ok handsets, the S2s have lasted forever, but even updated modern apps expect a certain amount of grunt that it just cant give. A newer OS will just slow it further.

I can't even seen to root this. It was simple enough from memory but it's just not happening.
